The [Mis]Adventures of OZ

Sorry that I hadn’t updated yall in so long.  For a while I was in a bit of a rut.  I was lonely and tired.  But I remembered that all I needed was social interaction.  Couch surfing is amazing, I never would have gotten to go rock climbing at Kangaroo Point or gotten the opportunity to experience Brisbane the way the locals do, but at the same time, they have their own lives and they live outside the city, so it can be isolating at times.  So, I decided that I needed to make friends, and what better weekend than my birthday weekend!!

I can honestly say that this has been one of the most memorable birthdays.  It was wonderful.  I also think that as a gift, I somehow got all my good karma cashed in.  I just had one amazing thing happen after another. J

I packed myself a picnic and a bag of the bare essentials and I ventured into the city on Friday afternoon. Even though I was still alone for the first few hours, I really enjoyed wandering by myself.  I finally got to walk the city streets and learn it.  I saw some contemporary Aboriginal art and I really liked it.  It’s beautiful with the colors, textures, and the movement of the pieces.  Not that I know anything about art, but I know that I liked what I saw.  That night, I went to the balcony at my hostel and it overlooks a busy street which is always fun.  I knew I could meet people out there.

Its so easy to make friends in a hostel, everyone is there for the same reason; to travel, have fun, and meet people.  I met a guy from NZ and he invited me to go with a group of people to the Valley.  The Valley is the China part or town but its really scene and chic.  I didn’t end up going with him, but instead, later I met these four English guys.  They have ten weeks to travel around Australia.  They just finished doing something in Somoa at the hospitals, they were all premed.  Nice J  Anyways, so when they heard it was my birthday they were very intent on making sure I spent it properly. They were really nice guys.  We headed out to this place in the Valley, the RG.  We bought a round then decided to go to a bar where they had music and a dance floor.  I ended up meeting this girl from Switzerland who was also celebrating her birthday.  We met because she had a beautiful hand made cardboard leaf in her hair and when it fell out, I returned it.  She ended up giving it to me, which was so nice, because she had two and someone actually made it for her.  It was simple but easy to see how much work was put into making it.  Yay! I love leaves.  I also met an Australian group of people and this one Cal was really nice and ended up paying for my taxi home because the English dudes had left.  I love Australians!  So one of the nicest things happened to me.  Before I went out that night, I invited everyone to go out.  I didn’t really talk to anyone, just said Hey, I’m going out if yall want to come, its my bday.  They didn’t but when I had returned that night, there was a plate on my bed with a doughnut and cookies and candles and a note saying happy bday, your roommates.  HOW NICE was that?  It was such a nice gesture, random act of kindness, made my day.

So that day I went around with Henric, the guy from Sweden.  We walked all around the city, to South Bank to see the markets, to the Royal Botanic Gardens, to the Valley, where we met up with Catherin, Jellain’s mom, to see her booth in the market.  She’s so cute, she showed us a really great place to eat lunch.  Henric is a really cool guy. First of all, we just clicked and he was awesome to go around the city with me while I obsessively took pictures of any pretty flower or tree that I saw. (I’m making an album of just flowers and trees next, lol)  He encouraged my love of trees and didn’t make fun of how dorky it was, so, therefore I like him. He’s smart and good conversation, and it didn’t hurt that he’s really cute.  He just spent four months in Cairns and made his way down the coast and is going home this week.  We got along really well and it reminded me of the guys back in Jax, miss you boys!  I hung out with the Irish girls that night, they gave me the number to their old boss.  They worked in a pub in a little Podunk town.  They loved it, said that they were with a bunch of other backpackers and the locals took them around and they also did farming stuff.  They also got free food and accommodation.  I think that sounds like a good deal to make some money.  But let’s see, so the girls from across the hall gave me a hat and told me to go down stairs because they were giving away three more bottles of Champaign.  I went down and Ritchie the guy at the reception, was trying to give me a hard time and said he wouldn’t give me the bottle because he already saw the hat.  Basically, after he gave it to me, I told him it was my bday and that I should have gotten it anyway.  He didn’t believe me and so I asked him to make a bet.  Yep, I also got a $50 bar tab!!!  What a way to start off the night.  As cool as it was to have the bar tab, I didn’t even need it.  So many people, when they heard it was my birthday wanted to buy me a drink anyways!  Henric was set on getting Sambuka and lighting it on fire.  The bar tenders said we’d get kicked out if we did that so we ran down the road to get one at an open air bar.  We asked this guy to take pictures and he was deff that kid you don’t invite out.  The whole time he was telling us why you don’t play with fire and what you don’t mix it with.  Yes, its smart and logical but not fun, so we left him, quick.  The girls headed down to the valley while Henric and I stayed at the bar dancing and waiting for Jellaine to come.  She has been in a seminar all weekend so it was really nice that she made it out, even if it was just for five minutes and then to drop us off at the Birdie Bar in the valley.  She is so cool and I’m really glad that I met her.

The Valley is the place to be in town.  There were so many kids lining the streets, it looked like the entrance to Disney World only everyone was dressed to kill and having lots of fun.  So the Birdie Bar was so much fun!!! Way better than the Pearl/TSI on its best night.  It was two stories and PACKED.  They played awesome music and everyone just wanted to dance.  Next we went across the street to this bar that has a water fall and cool plants lining the outside of the bar.  The inside was even cooler.  There are these seats that look like giant elegant bird cages, a huge tree with the trunk made out of different shaded tree trunk pieces and with huge white flowers on it.  The whole place was amazing and it felt like you were going to run into a celebrity at any moment.  It was that posh.  I can’t believe it was free to get into.  I’ll try to get back and take more pictures.  It was just so cool!!!  So Henric and I walked back from the Valley and that took a while because its kinda far, had a few drinks needless to say, and I kept seeing lots of cool things.  But basically, my night turned out great.  Great fun, Great company.

I think that karma is finally coming back to me. I’m just trying to be as nice, honest, and helpful as often as I can be.  Like when we went to eat dinner tonight using the rest of the bar tab, the bar tender completely messed up the voucher.  Said we had about 12 bucks left but I knew we had none.  So I gave it back to him and told him that I shouldn’t have any money left.  I thought, oh man, that could’ve been cool, but whatever, not my money now. So, karma has already been rewarding me, and tonight was no different.  I’ve met so many nice people while I’ve been here.  I was really lost on my way back to Jellain’s house tonight.  I took the bus, but the only thing is schedules and routes are different on Sundays.  I’m usually very good with directions, but to make it worse, once I get outside the city I can’t figure anything out for the life of me.  So, while on the bus, I discovered that I was WAY past my stop and that no one knew the road I needed to get to.  This guy pulls out a map and we figure it out and then realize no bus goes there at that hour.  He gets me the taxi number and he goes off to catch his bus.  Turns out his bus broke down so when the taxi came he asked if he could hop in because he just needed to go up the road.  I said I didn’t mind and turns out when he got out, he went ahead and paid the cab driver for my fare to get home.  How nice was that??  So nice!! Random acts of kindness again, I love it!! I was really grateful for that too, because what I thought would be a $5-10 ride turned out to be about $20.  Thanks, Doug!!  So now I am back at the house, waiting for the news of Addie’s birth and I can’t wait to see pictures of her and to see Vera with her.

I’m excited for tomorrow as well.  Jellaine and CJ, her brother, who by the way is a really nice guy, I’ll tell about him later too, are going to the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary.  I’m going to hold koalas and feed kangaroos and wallabies and all those cute furry natives!!!  Then, I’ll go back to the city the rest of the week and hang out with Henric before he flies back to Sweden.  I’m also thinking of moving north next week, to the Daintree Forest, Whitsunday islands and cairns.  The rainforest has the only living trees that old and I can’t wait, because I’m a sucker for trees.  Then head out to get a job.
