Wrote this yesterday, things have changed, but will update soon.
It’s beautiful here today and I’m getting summer fever!!!
So I am backtracking, I’m sure, sorry.. One of the things I loved about the GOR was that you could see acres and acres of fields full of beautiful little yellow flowers. They covered the hillsides. I love yellow flowers! It was a nice contrast between somewhat mundane-ness of the green hills and the grey sky. As you drive along the GOR, you notice that there is not much in between the larger cities. Some of towns just recently seemed to have gotton electricity and there was deff more cows than sheep and probably ten times more sheep than people. We stopped for a break at Tarpeena to have lunch in a playground and such and saw the sign boasting of its achievements, among them, 1960, electricity, and originally it was a watering place for horses between Warnambool and Adelaide.. wow! But none the less it was cool to go back in time through these tiny little towns. That night we were lost in another on of those tiny little towns. I thought it was hilarious because there are no lights and only one main road that is paved. So we are driving in the pitch black looking for a camp site. I think we passed the same farm house a million times which is funny also because they are so spread out. We decided on a park. We got out and they cooked pasta again. Now, I am usually a big help, willingly, but it was so cold, that I did not talk or help hardly at all. All I wanted to do was to wrap up in my sleeping bag, which!! I was told when I bought it was good for 0 degree weather…NO. It definitely wasn’t. I was freezing each night we camped. So cold, that I decided to fly north and miss out on the great road trip.
By the time we got to Adelaide though, the French kids were starting to warm up a little bit. But still, in comparison to the kids I met in hostels, I thought I could have more fun. The people I’ve met in hostels up til now have been amazing. To the point where, after five minutes we just click and can go out and eat, talk, do nothing and feel like we’re old friends, and that’s every place that I’ve stayed at so far, so I will wait and see what else comes up in the way of road trips.
Oh, but Adelaide..so it was a nice town. In a few ways it reminded me of Pensacola. Older buildings, really pretty, but not very big in the sense of a city with sky scrapers. The CBD was really small and so although I only spent a day there, I felt that I covered enough to be satisfied with saying I had been there. The free history museum was actually pretty good. Had some good exhibits on Aborigines and animals!
I don’t know if I already said this, but animals I’ve seen so far in their natural habitat: blue whales, kangaroos, penguins, and lots of beautiful birds. I am in a town called Coolangata now and I think since there is nothing else to do, I will go to a wild life sanctuary to ssee and feed koalas, wombats, and everything else cool that I can see here and you guys can’t!
Oh, So Coolangatta is I’m sure an awesome town, when its in season. I must have gotten such a cheap ticket because I am the ONLY backpacker in my hostel!! Well, about 7 kids checked out today, and so therefore I am sure I am the only one. I have seen no one else. It’s a small tourist trap of a town, kinda like home. Not much to do if you don’t intend on shopping or hanging on the beach. It is really nice though, I just was hoping to make some friends to travel to Brissy with next week so I can stay with Pandette and Pokemon. This town is so small, but the beach is beautiful and across the harbor I can see Surfer’s Paradise, a much larger city so it makes for an amazing view and sunset. I’ll take pictures tomorrow when I go for my run and post them later.
The weather is warmer, but not as warm as I wanted. Just a few more weeks I guess. One more thing that is cool about this town is that just a few minutes north is Kirra, (for the surf brand), and its where the world surf competitions for Quicksilver is held. Whoop Whoop. I bet that is the time to be here. I think this place must get crazy, just in a few weeks. Its an amazing hostel though. I’m sitting on the wrap around balcony on the second floor smelling the sea breeze. Each set of rooms opens onto the balcony and the only kitchen tables to eat at are here as well. So I think that when its filled with backpackers it must be the most fun hostel ever. Maybe I’ll hit it up on my way down south once summer starts. I don’t really have a game plan right now..just make it to Brissy and hopefully either find a job or some people I like to go to Fraiser Island/Great Barrier Wreath/Cairns with. One more thing that I was thinking of doing was to just go ahead and do everything it was that I wanted to do (This weather is perfect for it) and not worrying about money. If I blow it all, then I’ll come home, if I have enough I’ll stay and get a job. I’m sure I could stay in Brissy with the girls and find a job til I get on my feet, but I kinda want to make sure I don’t use money surviving with a job when I could make sure I get everything done that I want to do: desert, snorkeling/scuba diving on reef, Frasier Island, maybe sky diving? Port Douglas, cage diving with sharks!!! (always, always wanted a go at that!!!!), and then whatever random mess of fun comes my way. OR, Steve is coming in Dec. we could do all that fun stuff together too. I have had a few opportunities to get a job.. maybe I should do that… Yes I think I’ll go to Brissy and get a job!! Suggestions welcome, do tell me what you think??? So hopefully I have caught y’all up enough. I have posted a few times and lost it, so now I am writing it on Word and posting later, so there’s a chance I’ve skipped things. Does anyone read this besides my family?? If you do, I’m doing post cards this week, so send me your addy and wait and see if I love you enough…jk I will!! Love yall! I’m going to try and find some fun now. Take care and write me!!!
